Showerthought: A small timing tweak cleaned up my diesel's exhaust
On my 2002 Chevy Duramax, I moved the injection timing two degrees forward. I used a dial indicator and checked the service manual. Now, the truck runs smoother and the smoke on startup is much less. It's a small win, but cutting down on soot feels good.

Read somewhere that timing is huge for diesel smoke, not just on Duramax engines lol. Good to hear a simple tweak actually worked out for you.

Yeah, timing's a big deal across most diesels... get it wrong and you're pumping out black smoke even with good fuel. A solid tune can clean things up a lot.

Tell me about it, my truck was blowing black smoke for weeks before I got the timing sorted. Such a relief when it finally runs clean.
