Strict synthetic-only rule at my neighborhood diesel shop

Some mechanics say it's overkill, especially for older rigs, while others praise the long-term benefits. Where do you stand?

Wasn't there a tech article about synthetic oil keeping injectors cleaner? It said the detergents in synthetic blends break down carbon buildup better than conventional oil. For older trucks, that might mean fewer problems with clogged filters or poor fuel economy... So maybe it's not overkill if it saves on repairs down the road.

Ever notice how we skip small upkeep until something breaks? Like not cleaning phone chargers until they fray, or ignoring gutter cleaning until the basement floods. Your oil example is the same deal, paying a bit more now to avoid big headaches later.

Remember my '85 pickup that ran on cheap oil and prayers? My wallet learned that lesson the hard way.
