The day I saw an engine that looked like it sat in a swamp for 30 years vs 6 hours later

Drain the oil and pull the valve cover before you even bother cranking it. Seen too many guys waste a weekend cleaning up something that spun a bearing years ago. If the oil looks like chocolate milk or has metal flakes, walk away unless you got a spare engine block laying around. That carb is probably junk even if it looks clean, just plan on a rebuild kit or a reman unit. Make sure you put some Marvel Mystery Oil down the cylinders and let it soak for a day before trying to turn it by hand. And for the love of god, replace every rubber hose and seal you can reach, cause old rubber turns into rock hard garbage.

Disagree a bit here, sometimes those old motors surprise you with a good oil change and a tune-up.
