Got hit with a $750 bill from a tenant over a busted fence

I was at my rental near Whyte Ave last month and the tenant said a windstorm took down the shared fence, then tried to bill me for the whole repair since they 'assumed' I'd pay. Had to pull up the lease clause about shared property lines and told them the city bylaws actually split costs 50/50 unless agreed otherwise - has anyone else had tenants try to pass off neighbor disputes like that?

Yeah have you checked your local property line rules? I had almost the exact same thing a few years back, tenant tried to say I was on the hook for a fence their dog basically wrecked. Pulled the city bylaws and it was a 50/50 split with the neighbor, no way around it. Your contract probably has a clause about mutual fencing, but it's worth double checking if there's a specific line about shared maintenance costs. Sometimes you just gotta send them a screenshot of the local code and be like "here's why we're doing this.

Solidarity, man. Tenants pulling that move is the worst.
