I finally took my landlord to the LTB over a $1200 deposit dispute

My old landlord in Edmonton kept my whole damage deposit saying I ruined the carpet, but I had photos from move-in showing it was already stained. After 4 months of waiting, the board forced him to pay me back plus $50 for filing fees. Has anyone else had a landlord try to pull that trick with a security deposit?

Did you end up getting your full deposit back plus the filing fee? That's basically what happened to me a few years back. The LTB took almost 5 months but the landlord caved once they saw I had a signed move-in checklist plus dated photos. The key was showing I documented everything right away and had proof the damage was there before I moved in. Also saved every email and text between us just in case.

It's almost like everyone expects you to be an expert at covering your own back these days.
