Paralegal vs lawyer for a simple traffic ticket, which one actually wins?

I fought a red light camera ticket near Whyte Ave with a paralegal for $250 and got it tossed, but my buddy used a lawyer for a similar one and paid $800 with the same result. Is there any real point in paying double when paralegals handle these for a fraction of the cost, or am I just lucky once? Anyone else weigh the trade-off on minor offenses in Edmonton?

Man, that tracks with pretty much everything else in life though. The expensive option usually just means you're paying for the name and the office, not a better outcome.
