That moment I realized small claims court in Edmonton caps at $50,000

I was looking up how much I could sue my landlord for on the Alberta Courts site and found out the maximum is $50,000 even for bigger disputes, has anyone else hit that limit trying to take a contractor to court here?

yeah $50k sounds like a lot until you're actually out that much money lol. my buddy tried to sue a contractor who bailed on a basement Reno and left it half done, judge basically laughed him out because the damages were around $65k. he had to either eat the loss or go to real court which cost way more than the extra $15k was worth. Edmonton small claims is decent for smaller stuff but it sucks when you're just barely over the limit.

Did you ever look into filing a counterclaim or something like that? I had a similar thing happen with a roofer who left our place half done and when I went to small claims they tried to bump it up, but I ended up settling with them for like 80% of what I was owed just to avoid the hassle. It's a pain but sometimes you gotta take the half loaf.
