Why does nobody talk about tenant rights for illegal suites here
I rented a basement suite in Edmonton last year for $1,100 a month, and after a fire inspection, I found out it wasn't legal. The landlord never told me, and I almost got evicted when the city showed up. It took me three months and a trip to the LTB to sort it out. Has anyone else dealt with an unregistered rental here and won?

Nodding my head reading this, I went through the exact same mess with a place in Calgary last year.

You ever notice how landlords will slap a fresh coat of paint on a place but conveniently forget to mention it's not even registered with the city? I've seen that exact pattern with unregistered suites all over Edmonton, and it's like they're betting you won't check the city's rental registry before signing. Had a buddy in a similar basement deal, landlord tried to say it was just "storage space" when the city came knocking. The whole thing falls apart when people just assume a place is legal because it looks okay from the street.
