Appreciation post: I ignored the 'fail fast' advice and it saved my business in Austin. Three years ago, I stuck with a bad idea for 8 months when everyone said to quit.

Honestly, I see what you mean but I read that advice differently. "Fail fast" isn't about quitting the second things get hard. It's about testing your core idea quickly so you don't waste all your time and money. The original poster stuck with a bad idea for 8 months, and that's a long time to learn it wasn't working. The win was probably learning something crucial during that grind, not from ignoring the advice completely.

Yeah the "testing your core idea quickly" part is key. My friend had a food truck that was totally failing for months, kept changing small things like the menu and paint job. He finally asked his regulars what they actually wanted, turned out they just hated the location. Moved two blocks over and it saved the whole thing. Sometimes the grind shows you the real problem. @riverhill is right about runway too, he was broke so quitting wasn't an option.

People forget that "fail fast" assumes you have unlimited runway. Most of us don't. Sometimes sticking it out is the only option.
