I saw a coffee shop in Seattle doing something smart with their tip jar

I was at a place called The Daily Grind in Seattle last week, and they had three tip jars labeled 'For a good joke', 'For a local fact', and 'For a song request'. The owner told me it made tips go up by about 30% because people liked picking where their money went. It got me thinking about how small, fun choices can make customers feel more connected. Has anyone else seen a business use a simple idea like this to improve customer experience?

Isn't that just making tipping into a little game? I love when a place gives you a reason to care where your dollar goes. It feels less like a fee and more like you're buying a moment of fun. That tiny bit of choice probably makes people want to join in. Smart businesses get that a good vibe is worth more than any fancy decor.

Does the owner ever share what the most popular choice is? I'm curious if people go for jokes more than songs or if it changes with the time of day. It seems like that info could help other places copy the idea but tweak it for their own crowd.

I saw some data from a similar concept in Portland where jokes beat out songs by a pretty wide margin during lunch rush. They figured people wanted a quick laugh more than something they had to actually listen to. Makes sense, because who's got time to hear a whole song when you're just grabbing a sandwich and heading back to work.
