Local council eased rules for home-based startups in my area.
The new rules let me run my consultancy from my garage without a permit. What's the policy like where you are?

Yeah, and I wonder how this changes the whole feel of a neighborhood, you know? If half the street starts using their garage as a workshop or a small warehouse, it could really shift things from a quiet area to more of a mixed-use zone. That's not always bad, but it's a bigger deal than just skipping a permit fee. My old street had a guy doing auto detailing from his driveway and the constant customer traffic became a real issue.

Still need permits here. Total headache.

My street has three houses running what are basically small businesses from their garages now. One does custom woodwork, another repairs bikes, and the third, like @oliviabennett mentioned, got into a huge fight with the city over permits for his pottery studio. It feels less like a neighborhood and more like a quiet industrial park some days. The constant stream of vans and customers picking up orders really changes the whole vibe. You don't see people just hanging out on their porches anymore.
